2025-03-29

Eastern met up with HKFC in Mong Kok Stadium on Saturday evening for the 2024-25 Boc Life Hong Kong Premier League clash. Eastern drew HKFC by 1:1

In a pulsating BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League encounter at a packed Mong Kok Stadium on Saturday (March 29), title-chasing Eastern were held to a frustrating 1:1 stalemate by a resilient HKFC side.

The match burst into life immediately as Eastern launched a blistering offensive campaign. Marcos Gondra dispossessed an opponent before delivering a pinpoint cross from the left flank. The subsequent delivery from Nicolas Benhaddouche found Ma Hei Wai, who directed the ball with his chest towards the goal, but the keeper was in the right position to gather it.

The 17th minute saw Eastern orchestrate another well-crafted attack. Ma Hei Wai, displaying exceptional footwork, bamboozled his marker on the left before executing a clinical cutback. Gu Bin unleashed a thunderous left-footed drive that forced a spectacular save from the alert goalkeeper. The danger wasn't over as Calum Hall whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, but Ma Hei Wai's powerful header was expertly gathered.

The relentless pressure continued in the 19th minute when Nicolas Benhaddouche's precision cross found Baffoe Noah lurking in the danger zone, but his headed effort sailed agonizingly off target.

A golden opportunity presented itself on the half-hour mark as Ma Hei Wai's defense-splitting through ball put Baffoe Noah clean through on goal, only for the goalkeeper to produce a crucial save with his legs.

Eastern thought they had broken the deadlock in the 40th minute when Baffoe Noah latched onto Aleksander Mitrovic's perfectly weighted long ball, rounded the keeper with aplomb and slotted home, only for the assistant's flag to cut short the celebrations.

HKFC's only notable first-half chance came in the dying moments through Marcus McMillan's speculative long-range effort that failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

The teams went into the interval deadlocked at 0:0, despite Eastern's territorial dominance.

The breakthrough finally came two minutes after the restart. Baffoe Noah, showcasing individual brilliance, wrong-footed his marker in midfield before embarking on a magnificent solo run, culminating in a clinical left-footed finish into the far corner, making it 1:0.

The goalscorer nearly doubled his tally moments later, receiving Ma Hei Wai's clever pass before engineering space for a right-footed effort that the keeper did well to save.

Eastern continued to dominate proceedings, and the 62nd minute saw another gilt-edged chance. Gu Bin and Ma Hei Wai combined expertly before the former delivered an inviting cross that Baffoe Noah headed fractionally over the crossbar.

The woodwork then came to HKFC's rescue as Leung Kwun Chung's spectacular 30-yard thunderbolt crashed against the upright following Marcos Gondra's intelligent layoff.

Baffoe Noah remained a constant threat, rising highest to meet Marcos Gondra's delivery in the 74th minute, but his header lacked the power to trouble the HKFC custodian.

Against the run of play, HKFC found an equalizer in the 77th minute. Marcus McMillan's precise cross from the right flank was expertly cushioned by Auston Kranick into the path of Callum Beattie, who showed remarkable composure to fire home.

Eastern launched a late siege in search of a winner. Wong Tsz Ho came agonizingly close with a fierce drive from an acute angle, while Bleda Rodrigues attempted an audacious bicycle kick from Wong Tsz Tsz's precise delivery, but neither could find the decisive touch.

In the end, Eastern and HKFC drew 1:1, with each team taking one point.
