2022-23 BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League – Wofoo Tai Po 1:2 HKFC
Wofoo Tai Po hosted HKFC in Tai Po Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon for the first BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League fixture of the day. Frederik Schipper and Alexandre Dujardin both scored on the day, as HKFC edged Wofoo Tai Po by 2:1 in the premier league encounter.
HKFC got off to a dream start and took the lead barely five minutes into the game. A HKFC centering pass from the left wing was dealt with ineffectively by the Wofoo Tai Po defense. The ball somehow fell for Frederik Schipper, who duly side-footed it into the Wofoo Tai Po net, giving the visitors a dream start.
Wofoo Tai Po failed to settle early in the game and the next scoring chance belongs to HKFC as well. On the 9th minute, Paulo Carreiro gave chase to a teammate’s forward pass, then fired a tight angle shot from the right side of the penalty area that was smartly claimed by Wofoo Tai Po goalkeeper Tse Ka-wing.
Wofoo Tai Po generated its first scoring chance of the game on the 13th minute, as Paulo Simionato fought off pressure from several HKFC players outside the box and pulled the trigger, only to send the ball bouncing wide off target.
HKFC stunned the home side and doubled its lead on the 16th minute. Jean Maciel knocked a teasing cross towards the middle. The ball was ineffectively punched away by Wofoo Tai Po goalkeeper Tse Ka-wing. Leonardo Peres unloaded and sent the ball towards the middle. Alexandre Dujardin added a nifty back heel at the doorstep and sent the ball into the net. HKFC was up 2:0 at this point.
On the 23rd minute, Wofoo Tai Po tried to answer back, as Gabriel Cividini connected with a teammate’s corner-kick delivery and dished out a tasty header towards the net, only to be easily handled by HKFC goalkeeper Frederick Toomer.
The home side came up with a solid chance to get on the scoreboard. On the 30th minute, Paulo Simionato found himself on the receiving end of a teammate’s centering pass, then fired a sliding shot from doorstep that was brilliantly paved away by Frederick Toomer in the HKFC goal.
On the 42nd minute, Wofoo Tai Po produced one more scoring chance, yet Luiz Dos Santos volley from the left wing failed to get past the well-positioned Frederick Toomer in goal.
The first half wrapped up with HKFC enjoying a 2:0 lead over Wofoo Tai Po.
Early in the second half, Wofoo Tai Po had successive chances to cut into HKFC’s lead, yet Paulo Simionato’s back-to-back shots failed to solve HKFC goalkeeper Frederick Toomer.
However, Wofoo Tai Po was not to be denied and managed to cut HKFC’s lead into half on the 56th minute. Joao Emir floated a well-placed centering pass to the HKFC box. Gabriel Cividini took up great position and duly nodded the ball home. Wofoo Tai Po was down by a goal at this point.
On the 72nd minute, Wofoo Tai Po’s Cheng Tsz-sum made a darting run down the left wing, then cut towards the middle and fired away, only to see his shot hit a HKFC player and bounced wide.
Wofoo Tai Po took over the game late in the second half, hoping to find the equalizer. On the 78th minute, Cheng Tsz-sum teed up teammate Fung Kwun-ming with a nice pass. The latter stepped up to the ball outside the penalty area and fired away, only to be denied by a sensational one-hand save from HKFC goalkeeper Frederick Toomer.
Late in the game, Wofoo Tai Po had one last chance to get level, yet Paulo Simionato’s header sailed over the HKFC crossbar.
The 2:1 eventually stood all the way to the final whistle, as HKFC edged Wofoo Tai Po through a 2:1 thriller.
