2021-22 Sapling Cup (Second Round) – RCFC 0:1 Kwoon Chung Southern
RCFC and Kwoon Chung Southern locked horns in Mongkok Stadium on late Sunday afternoon for the second Sapling Cup clash of the day. Stefan Pereira’s goal proved to be the difference of the game, as Kwoon Chung Southern went on to edge RCFC by 1:0.
RCFC generated several early chances in the game and nearly took the lead. On the 4th minute, Yeung Hin-lok took aim on a free-kick and drilled the ball straight towards the Kwoon Chung Southern net, only to fire the ball over the woodwork.
Moments later, it was still RCFC, as Felipe Sa made a dazzling solo run down the right wing but smashed his left-footer high above the Kwoon Chung Southern net.
It was finally Kwoon Chung Southern’s turn on the 8th minute, yet Paco Chan’s free-kick attempt was smartly handled by RCFC goalkeeper Lam Chun-kit.
Things swung back to RCFC’s favor shortly afterwards. On the 10th minute, Harima Hirokane knocked a dangerous cross towards the middle and caused melee inside the Kwoon Chung Southern penalty area. Diego Pelaez fired away but blasted the ball wide off target.
Past the half hour mark, Kwoon Chung Southern had a solid chance to break the game open. A long throw-in was headed on by diminutive striker Stefan Pereira. Shu Sasaki seized the opportunity but drilled the ball over the crossbar.
Kwoon Chung Southern continued to exert pressure on the RCFC goal. On the 38th minute, Stefan Pereira spun-and-fired but saw his shot easily claimed by RCFC goalkeeper Lam Chun-kit.
On the 41st minute, RCFC’s Felipe Sa gave chase to a teammate’s long pass, motored into the Kwoon Chung Southern box but fired the ball wide.
Immediately afterwards, Felipe Sa came up with another scoring chance. This time, the RCFC attacker intercepted a Kwoon Chung Southern pass, then pulled the trigger from down the middle but saw his shot hit an opposing player and went out of play. The first half ended goalless.
Kwoon Chung Southern went ahead early in the second half. On the 55th minute, Khan Jahangir whipped a teasing cross towards the middle. Stefan Pereira connected with a timely header and found the back of the net. The Hong Kong Island-side was up 1:0.
On the 63rd minute, RCFC had a glorious chance to tie the game. Liu Yik-shing made a powerful run down the left side and pulled the trigger, only to see his shot stopped by Kwoon Chung Southern goalkeeper Ng Wai-him.
RCFC kept searching for the equalizer. On the 64th minute, Felipe Sa delivered a great centering pass into the Kwoon Chung Southern penalty area. Harima Hirokane went flying in but saw his spectacular diving header brilliantly turned away by Kwoon Chung Southern goalkeeper Ng Wai-him.
On the 79th minute, Kwoon Chung Southern’s Stefan Pereira connected with a teammate’s cross and headed the ball home. However, the goal was called back due to offside.
RCFC had a half-decent chance to draw level on the 83rd minute. Yeung Hin-lok knocked the ball deep into the Kwoon Chung Southern danger area. Chiu Wan-chun failed to control the ball and missed out on the opportunity.
On the 90th minute, RCFC produced an even batter chance. An RCFC corner-kick reached Ho Chun-ho. The RCFC substitute unloaded by blasted the ball over the crossbar.
Deep in stoppage time, RCFC’s Wong Ching-tak tried his luck with a long-range blast but could not hit the target with his effort.
The 1:0 stood all the way towards the final whistle, as Kwoon Chung Southern went on to beat RCFC and took home all three points.
