2020-21 BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League – RCFC 1:2 BC Rangers


RCFC hosted BC Rangers on Saturday afternoon for the lone BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League fixture of the day. Substitute Hirokane Harima became BC Rangers’ hero of the day, as the forward scored the match-winner deep in stoppage time and led his side past RCFC through a 2:1 victory.

Barely a minute into the game, RCFC generated a superb scoring chance to break the game open. Down the left-hand side, youngster Yue Tsz-nam sent teammate Law Chun-yan flying behind the BC Rangers defense with a superb forward pass. The latter motored into the BC Rangers box, fought off opposing pressure and fired away, only to see his tight-angle shot nicely smothered by goalkeeper Li Yat-chun.

BC Rangers had a wonderful chance to go ahead on the 23rd minute, when debutant Philip Chan found himself on the receiving end of a teammate’s header, then unloaded a cracking shot from inside the RCFC box but sent the ball over the crossbar.

On the other hand, it was back to RCFC’s turn. Jordon Brown knocked a corner-kick deep into the BC Rangers penalty area. Felipe De Sa sent a looping header towards goal but could not get past the well-positioned Li Yat-chun in the BC Rangers net.

Past the half hour mark, it was BC Rangers that broke the game open in spectacular fashion. Brazilian forward Augusto Da Silva gained control of the ball inside his own half, then pushed towards the half-way line and dished out an eye-popping long range lob shot that beat RCFC goalkeeper Lam Chun-kit and entered the net. It was a superb strike by the BC Rangers attacker.

RCFC tried to reply and had a half decent chance to do so shortly afterwards. Unfortunately for RCFC, Law Chun-yan’s header from inside the BC Rangers box was nicely claimed by goalkeeper Li Yat-chun. Both sides eventually wrapped up the first half with BC Rangers enjoying a one-goal lead.

RCFC almost tied the game past the half hour mark. On the 63rd minute, Jordon Brown whipped a teasing corner-kick into the BC Rangers box. RCFC defender Albert Canal sent a powerful header towards goal but nodded the ball over the crossbar.

On the other end, BC Rangers also came close, as Lam Ka-wai delivered a dangerous corner-kick to the RCFC doorstep. Lam Hok-hei soared high but directed his leaping header over the RCFC goal.

RCFC managed to tie the game on the 69th minute. Law Chun-yan made a great run on the left side and reached the BC Rangers penalty area. However, Law was brought down by BC Rangers defender Jean Kilama. The referee quickly pointed to the penalty spot. Felipe De Sa assumed the spot-kick duty but saw his strike nicely saved by goalkeeper Li Yat-chun. De Sa reacted quickly and tucked home the rebound, tying the game at 1:1.

BC Rangers had a solid chance to regain its lead on the 78th minute, as Jean Kilama made a powerful run down the right wing and crossed the ball towards the middle. Lau Chi-lok righted himself with the ball and pulled the trigger but sent the ball wide.

Shortly afterwards, BC Rangers came up with an even better chance. Leading a dangerous counter-attack, forward Lam Hok-hei made a great move, shook off his marker and unloaded a powerful shot from outside the RCFC box, only to witness his shot rung off the crossbar and stayed out of the net.

Deep in stoppage time, the match reached the climax, as BC Rangers went in front once again. Veteran Lam Ka-wai knocked a well-placed free-kick to the RCFC goal-mouth. Substitute Hirokane Harima connected with a powerful header and sent the ball to the back of the RCFC net. The score was now 2:1 with BC Rangers in front.

Both sides failed to add to the score in the remaining regulation time, as BC Rangers edged RCFC through a 2:1 victory.
