Hong Kong hosted Cambodia on Tuesday evening in Hong Kong Stadium for a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 Group C fixture. Goals from James Ha and Roberto Affonso were Hong Kong needed to come out on top, as the home side went on to defeat Cambodia by 2:0, earning its first victory in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2
Cambodia fired the first shot of the game on the 7th minute, as Sath Rosib pulled the trigger from outside the Hong Kong penalty area but could not locate the target.
On the 10th minute, it was Hong Kong’s turn. Tsui Wang-kit’s throw-in from the left-side caused temporary havoc near the Cambodia goal-mouth. Leung Nok-hang applied an opportunistic header but could not send the ball past Cambodia goalkeeper Keo Soksela.
Shortly after, Hong Kong came up with a great chance to open the score. On the 14th minute, James Ha nicely took down a teammate’s throw-in, then unleashed a dipping volley that narrowly missed hitting the intended target.
The home side went on to open the score on the 21st minute through a counter-attack. Alexander Akande and Roberto Affonso teamed up and did some great work down the right side. Affonso whipped a superb cross towards the middle. James Ha latched onto the ball at the far-post and knocked it straight into the Cambodia net. Hong Kong was up by 1:0.
The game went into a stalemate afterwards the and both teams failed to come up with any significant scoring chance right towards the half-time whistle.
Early in the second-half, Cambodia generated a half-decent chance to tie the game. Keo Sokpheng fired a free-kick from the left-flank straight towards the Hong Kong goal, only to be smothered by goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.
On the 76th minute, Hong Kong almost doubled its lead. James Ha delivered a sweet cross towards the middle. Giovane Da Silva soared high but could not generate enough power on his header to beat Cambodia goalkeeper Keo Soksela.
Cambodia suffered a major blow on the 78th minute, as captain Soeuy Visal picked up his second yellow card of the game and his subsequent marching order. Cambodia was down to ten men.
Hong Kong went on and doubled its lead on the 83rd minute. Roberto Affonso picked up the ball near the edge of the Cambodia box, then belted a sweet shot that found the Cambodia net while surrounded by opposing players. It was now 2:0 for Cambodia.
The score stood towards the final whistle, as Hong Kong went on to defeat Cambodia by 2:0.
