Besides powering Eastern Long Lions all the way to the FA Cup Final through some timely goals, Leonardo’s tremendous displays on the field also saw him being named as the BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League MVP (March 2020), co-chosen by The Football Association of Hong Kong, China and the Hong Kong Sports Press Association.
The personable Leonardo was playing for Wofoo Tai Po in the first half of the current season and was already in sizzling form – scoring eight times for the New Territories side. After joining Eastern Long Lions at the turn of the new year, the veteran striker continued to find the back of the net with regularity, netting four goals in five games while donning Eastern Long Lions colors, thus keeping his scoring streak alive ever since signing on for his new club. As a matter of fact, in Eastern Long Lions’ three FA Cup matches in March, Leonardo banged home four goals along the way and was a major reason why the team made it all the way to the cup final.
Cheerful by nature and always has a smile on his face, Leonardo is extremely pleased to be named as the Hong Kong Premier League MVP of March, despite still relatively new to Eastern Long Lions.
“Leaving Wofoo Tai Po to join Eastern Long Lions was a very difficult decision, especially since I had a wonderful time with Wofoo Tai Po, winning the club’s first ever Hong Kong Premier League title last season,” Leonardo reflected.
“However, this is how professional football works and earning the monthly MVP award for March, shortly after signing for Eastern Long Lions, is an amazing feeling!
Ever since I have become a member of the Eastern Long Lions family, I just keep working hard every day in training, hoping to learn the team’s playing system and trying to adapt to it.”
Equally adept on passing and scoring, Leonardo generously deflects all the credit to his teammates regarding his red-hot scoring form.
“There are a lot of great players in the Eastern Long Lions lineup, such as Wong Wai and Everton Camargo. Playing with quality players such as the two of them certainly makes my work much easier,” explained Leonardo.
“As long as I can pass the ball to my teammates and get open, they can always find me through wonderful passes, allowing me to come up with great scoring chances.”
Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the Hong Kong Premier League fixtures were forced to come to a halt in late-March. However, Leonardo maintains he has been working on his fitness diligently at home, hoping to get ready for the restart of the premier league.
“While the premier league season might have paused for quite some time now, I have actually added some fitness equipment to my home, allowing myself to stay in good physical shape,” revealed Leonardo.
Hopefully, when the domestic league resumes, I can be in fine form to help Eastern Long Lions to challenge for all honors.”
