The winner of the Hong Kong Premier League MVP trophy (November, 2018), co-handed out by The Football Association of Hong Kong, China and the Hong Kong Sports Press Association, has been announced. Towering R&F centre-back Leung Nok-hang emerged from a host of spectacular premier league performers and claimed the monthly honor in convincing fashion.
The soft-spoken Leung believes winning the monthly MVP as a defender makes his latest individual accomplishment just that extra special.
“Strikers and midfielders usually garner most of the limelight, therefore to be able to come up with the MVP award as a defender, I am really stoked about the accomplishment,” the twenty-four year-old shared.
At the time of writing (26th December, 2018), Leung has appeared in nine games for R&F so far this season while netting four goals. The bruising defender also boasts a sensational strike-rate in the month of November by bagging two goals from two games.
When asked about his goal bonanza, Leung deflects most of the credit to two of his senior R&F teammates.
“I have to thank all of my R&F teammates for their assistance, as they have really helped me a lot behind my goals,” the humble rearguard expressed with appreciation.
“At the same time, I also want to single out Manoel Santos and Bai He for their tremendous contribution. These two R&F elder statesmen have supplied so many quality crosses for us throughout the season, creating tons of goal-scoring chances for myself.”
Despite getting on a wonderful goal-scoring spree this season, contributing to R&F’s solid campaign with some timely goals, Leung insists defending remains his top priority on the pitch.
“As a defender, my main task in each and every game is to defend,” Leung stated clearly.
“No matter the head coach decides to play a three-centre-back formation or a four-man defensive unit, my objective remains the same and that is to help the team to keep a clean sheet.”
“Reflecting on the early months in the current season, my personal form was quite decent and all the goals are basically a wonderful bonus.”
The promising Leung switched alliance in the summer by leaving Hong Kong Pegasus and signing for R&F. Leung’s arrival seems to be have jump-started R&F’s fortunes, as the mainland side has been soaring high in the premier league table. Leung’s solid display on the pitch has not gone unnoticed, as the centre-back was rewarded by a recall to the senior Hong Kong Representative Team.
The down-to-earth defensive rock looks back on his decision to head north and to join R&F as a wise football decision, especially to his still-developing football career.
“R&F gave me a wonderful football platform and I understand very clearly that this is a club that can help me to continue my football development,” Leung said.
“The team is occupying one of the run-running positions in the league-table at the moment but no matter if we win this season’s title or not, as long as we keep improving as a unit, I know it is just a matter of time that we get our hands on the silverware.”
