Jointly presented by The Football Association of Hong Kong, China and the Hong Kong Sports Press Association, the Hong Kong Premier League MVP award for February, 2018 was announced over the weekend. With some very assuring performances in the month of February, it was no surprise to see Kitchee's burly Brazilian striker Lucas Da Silva becoming the latest winner of the monthly award.
“It is a fantastic feeling to be named as the Hong Kong Premier League MVP for February, yet I have never placed any individual honor ahead of the team. After all, Kitchee is one of the stronger sides in the Hong Kong Premier League and I have a fairly easy job to do, which is work hard and try to score goals for the side,” explained the extremely humble Da Silva.
While scoring three goals from two games in February, Lucas Da Silva has actually been lighting it up in the local circuit this whole season. However, failing to force his way into Kitchee's AFC Champions League squad has admittingly become a sore note for the striker. Nevertheless, the strong-willed Da Silva has vowed to turn the disappointment into motivation, as he seeks to score even more goals for Kitchee.
“Of course, it is very disappointing not to make it to Kitchee's playing squad in the AFC Champions League,” Da Silva confessed.
“Like all professional players, we want to play in the highest possible level and I am no different. I understand I was injured earlier this season, hence I respect the coaches' ultimate decision, as well as all my teammates who are playing in the AFC Champions League.”
“The only thing that I can do right now is to fight hard for Kitchee in the local competition, score more goals and prove that I have what it takes to cut it in the highest possible level.”
With the local football season fast approaching the final stretch, Lucas Da Silva, who has netted fourteen premier league goals for Kitchee so far this season, acknowledges he does have aspiration regarding getting his hands on the premier league top scorer trophy.
“It is true that I would like to get my hands on the premier league top scorer award but I will always put Kitchee's well-being in the first place,” Da Silva restated.
“If Kitchee can retain the premier league crown and I can fend off challenges from the other premier league strikers, then that will be the best possible way to finish the season. (smile).”
