The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) announced on last Friday afternoon that voting for the 2015/16 Hong Kong Top Footballer Awards has officially gone underway.
As in the past, awards such as Footballer of the Year, Hong Kong Top Footballers, Most Favourite Player, Coach of the Year and Young Players of the Year (2 winners) will be selected by the general public, media and a judging panel. A new award, named Players’ Player of the Year, will also be handed out this year, to the player who is most recognized by his peers in the Hong Kong Premier League.
BC Rangers forward Quentin Lendresse, in only his first season in Hong Kong football, is ecstatic to represent his team in the voting. “There are a lot of fantastic players in the Hong Kong Premier League and I am truly honored to be one of the nominees in the voting,” said the charismatic Frenchman. “I know the HKFA has added a Players’ Player of the Year award this year and if you are asking me about that, my vote will go to Eastern’s Giovane Da Silva. He is simply a wonderful player and plays a really intelligent game.”
South China fan favourite Awal Mahama admits he might not be one of the favorites in this year’s voting but gives teammate Andrew Russell a glowing endorsement. “My own performance this season is not as good as last year’s, hence I am not expecting much from an individual award point of view,” explained the South China speedster. “However, I do want to thank the South China fans for their passionate support behind the team. As far as a dark horse for this year’s voting is concerned, I do think my teammate Andrew Russell deserves a lot of recognition. He works very hard in training and even made it into the Hong Kong representative team. That speaks volume about his play this season.”
Kitchee’s promising youngster Li Ngai-hoi is one of the few players to be nominated for both, the Hong Kong Top Footballers and Young Players of the Year awards. Young Li maintains his surprise on the two nominations. “I am flattered for the opportunities, especially seeing my name appearing on the short-list of the Hong Kong Top Footballers. If you want me to gauge my own chances, I think I might have a better chance in the Young Players of the Year award. After all, I am competing against players in my own age group when it comes to that particular category,” Li said.
