In a thrilling Sunday afternoon clash (September 14) at the HK Football Club ground, BC Rangers clinched a vital 2:0 victory over HKFC in the BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League, bagging all three points in their campaign.
HKFC burst out of the blocks, with Manuel Montesinos unleashing a speculative long-range effort that whistled past the upright after just two minutes. Moments later, Chan Pak Hei rose highest to meet Inoue Tatsuya's pinpoint cross, only for the goalkeeper to produce a magnificent reflex save.
The home side continued to press forward, with the industrious Inoue Tatsuya dispossessing an opponent in a dangerous position before curling his effort agonizingly wide of the target.
As the half progressed, BC Rangers weathered the early storm and began to stamp their authority on proceedings. Ibrahim Yakubu showcased his shooting prowess with a venomous strike from the left flank that sailed marginally over the crossbar, before later testing the HKFC goalkeeper with a thunderous drive from the edge of the area that required a spectacular full-stretch save.
The 18th minute saw HKFC carve out another gilt-edged opportunity when Naveed latched onto a sumptuous long ball and surged into the penalty box, only to drag his effort across the face of goal from an acute angle.
Both sides continued to serve up an attacking feast with chances flowing at both ends. BC Rangers forward Lau Chi Lok found himself in a promising position after a defense-splitting through ball, but his strike from a tight angle cannoned off the woodwork. At the other end, Inoue Tatsuya connected sweetly with Manuel Montesinos’ inviting cross from the right flank, executing a technically perfect volley that the goalkeeper somehow managed to parry to safety.
Despite the end-to-end action, the teams headed into the dressing rooms deadlocked at 0:0 after an enthralling first period.
Following the restart, BC Rangers began to assert their dominance. The 54th minute saw Ibrahim Yakubu make a scintillating run into the box after latching onto Maxwell Ansah's perfectly weighted through ball, unleashing a fierce drive that the goalkeeper partially blocked before it struck the upright and rebounded to safety.
BC Rangers squandered a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 73rd minute when Ibrahim Yakubu found himself one-on-one with the onrushing goalkeeper. After his initial attempt was thwarted, he recovered the loose ball and pivoted to shoot towards the unguarded net, only for the heroic Hugo Moreira to produce a goal-line clearance of the highest order.
The deadlock was finally shattered two minutes later when the clinical Ibrahim Yakubu rose majestically amid a forest of defenders to power home a header from Matias Panigazzi' perfectly delivered corner kick from the left flank. BC Rangers lead by 1:0.
BC Rangers put the result beyond doubt in the 87th minute through a breathtaking counter-attack. Cheng Tsz Sum embarked on a lung-busting run from his own half before penetrating the penalty area, and although his goal-bound effort was parried by the goalkeeper, Matias Panigazzi was perfectly positioned to slam home the rebound with aplomb.
When the referee blew the final whistle, BC Rangers had secured a hard-fought but thoroughly deserved 2:0 triumph, collecting all three points.
